Losing weight is hard, and there’s a whole bunch of supposed miracle solutions on the market. Whilst many of these don’t work, there are some things that – alongside hard work and a healthy diet – will help you lose weight effectively!
Vitamin D plays a vital role in the use of glucose in your system. It’s responsible for how efficiently your body can make use of it by affecting your insulin sensitivity. When you have a deficiency of vitamin D, you’ll find that your body retains fat more. Many people have at least a slightly deficiency since vitamin D comes mostly via sunlight rather than food sources. However, it is possible to get supplements of it (or cereals that are fortified to contain it). If you’re looking to add in supplements to help with weight loss, vitamin D is the best one to start with since it’s almost certain you’ll be lacking it.
Protein may sound like an odd choice – after all, body builders drink protein shakes to gain muscle. But that’s why it’s useful. One of the most efficient ways to lose weight is to keep your fat/muscle ratio well balanced. By adding in protein supplements you’ll ensure that you retain your muscle as fat drops off. You may find the number on the scales doesn’t drop as fast, but visually you’ll lose apparent weight as the change will be from fat to muscle.
Omega-3s have a whole bunch of ways that they help you lose weight effectively. Firstly – and most importantly – they help switch on enzymes that cause fat-burning to happen. But as a bonus, they also boost your mood and leptin production – meaning you feel fuller, and happier (and we all know that help avoid comfort eating, right?). One difficulty with omega-3s is that they’re mostly found through fish and the fish that is most efficient is usually fatty and containing less useful things too! Instead of adding more of this, or even fish oil, into your diet, we recommend looking for vegan omega 3 instead. You can find this through flax and chia seeds primarily. Vegan omega 3 sources are rich in omega 3 (which you want) but low in omega 6 (which you don’t!).
Green tea is amazing for helping weight loss. It’s low in caffeine, so it’ll have just enough to wake you up in a morning without the negative side-effects coffee or stronger tea can have. It’s packed with antioxidants, but especially of note is the fact it contains Epigallocatechin gallate, which boosts your metabolism. (Though be aware, if you’re under treatment for any serious medical conditions, you’ll want to check in on this one with a medical professional!). Whilst it’s possible to take green tea extract supplements, we recommend drinking it – since by drinking it, you’ll also reduce your hunger, leading to eating less.
Add Some Cinnamon
Finally, cinnamon! You can take this is numerous ways – our favorite is mixing it with honey and hot water as a drink – and it’s incredibly helpful. Like Vitamin D, it helps with insulin levels, and decreases your blood sugar levels. Regulating blood sugar levels leads to less hoarding of fat so this plus some vitamin D supplements will mean your body drastically changes its relationship to glucose and fat. In addition, like green tea, it can cause you to crave food less. But – and this is really useful – unlike the other items on here, its sweet! One hard part of losing weight is the temptation of sweet food, so if that’s a struggle you have; we recommend cinnamon as the solution.
So they’re our top supplements and herbal remedies for weight loss – vitamin D, protein shakes and vegan omega 3 in supplement form, and then green tea and cinnamon for your food.
